hmm, if this is true, then the genre will be facing some very stiff competition. Thanks for finding and posting this.

I don't know. Day1 might be going back to Mechassault, but they've been making a lot of really shitty games lately. They also just laid off 2/3 of their employees. Sounds like the article is hinting at an E3 announcement though.

I sense licensing issues.  In case you've  haven't been paying attention, and judging by the numbers, you probably haven't, there is an issue between the electronic gaming rights of MechWarrior vs. the licensing of Battletech in general.  Recently, upon issuing the news of their work on the new MechWarrior, Bryan Ekman issued an answer during his most recent QnA that Pirhana studios obtained the electronic gaming rights to MechWarrior. link:  http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/01/87...ley-bryan-ekman

MWO is by far the largest and most important project I have ever been involved in.  The fact we control our own destinies and IP for PC and Xbox platforms, gives us the ability to push for quality and value over timeframes and rigid milestone schedules.

take what you will what this means.

It didn't start that way. It was originally announced as a reboot of the Mechwarrior series and in development for PC and Xbox 360. Possibly even cross-platform like shadowrun, but not sure. Anyway they never found anybody to publish the game so instead the opted with the make it a free-to-play pc only title. Honestly I'm not expecting anybody other then hardcore MW fans to play it just because they haven't had a MW game in a long time. The fact that nobody would publish it is kind of making me feel that it wasn't a very good looking game. I don't think any gameplay has been seen since it was announced. And Piranha Games also hasn't made anything notable other then a few Need for Speed games and a few movie tie-in games.
